in recent years, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (emdr )therapy has gained recognition as an effective treatment for various mental health issues. originally developed to help individuals process traumatic memories, emdr has proven beneficial for conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd), sports performance anxiety, eating disorders, and feelings of overwhelm with everyday life that can lead to shut-down or avoidance or overfunctioning and a sense of always feeling hurried.

what is emdr therapy?

emdr is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals process and integrate distressing memories and experiences. it involves a structural 8 phase approach, which includes:

  2. resource development

  3. assessment of distressing target areas

  4. desensitization to the distressing targets

  5. installation of healthy systems in place of distruessing

  6. body scan to make sure that there is no residual effect of distress left in the body

  7. closure

  8. re-evaluation
